Apps help you stay
connected and can improve your daily efficiency — that is, as long as
they don't drain your phone's battery first.
As apps become more sophisticated, they tend to become battery hogs, too. Social media,
email and other applications eat up power and memory much faster than
we'd like. But there are plenty of free "lite" versions you can use as
alternatives to your favorites. They may not have all the bells and
whistles you're used to, but they will help extend your battery life.
We've compiled a list of seven simpler versions of our favorite apps so
you don't have to worry about your battery or memory. Check them out
below.
If the official
Facebook
app is slowing down your phone, try downloading the Lite WebApp for
Facebook. This Facebook lookalike was designed for phones with low
memory and can save some of your battery.
This app is only available for
Android devices, but check out
Friendly for an iOS alternative.
2. PinHog for Pinterest
Another battery-draining social media app is
Pinterest. Without using up your precious data plan, PinHog lets you use Pinterest while you're offline.
The app is only available for
Android devices.
By constantly refreshing your feed,
Twitter
can take a toll on your battery. Tweedle, an alternative to Twitter,
runs smoothly, consumes less battery and has a clean interface.
Tweedle is available for
Android devices. For an iOS alternative, check out
Twitterrific 5 for Twitter.
With YT Movies, you can watch
YouTube
clips and send them to your smart TV and other media players. YTMovies
(Lite) is ad-supported with limited options, and is only available for
Android devices. There is also an ad-free
Pro YT Movies version available at the Android store for $0.99.
For an iOS alternative, try
Jasmine.
If your go-to photo editing app is eating up your phone's memory, try
PicShop Lite. This app massively reduces memory usage and allows you to
edit, add filters and frames, and share your photos.
PicShop Lite is available for both
Android and
iOS devices.
Weather apps are constantly updated when you change locations, which
means they can wreak havoc on your battery. Get access to weather
wherever you are without killing your battery with My-Cast Weather Lite.
This app is only available for
Android devices. An upgraded version, My-Cast Weather, is available for
Android and
iOS devices for $3.99.
Mail apps can destroy your battery life as they retrieve incoming
emails. A great alternative is CloudMagic, which simply consolidates all
of your email accounts into one app. You can find emails quickly and,
most importantly, it's easy on battery life.
CloudMagic is available for both
Android and
iOS.
